Food Security, Nutrition and Sustainable Agriculture through the prism of the Sustainable Development Goals
New York, Thursday June 4th 2015: The Global Partnerships Forum is honored to report on the panel discussion held at the United Nations regarding Food Security, Nutrition and Sustainable Agriculture through the prism of the Sustainable Development Goals. The event was organized by the Permanent Missions of Ecuador, Georgia, Italy and South Africa, in collaboration with FAO, IFAD, and WFP.
Among the speakers at this enlightening event were representatives from governments, international organizations, civil society, and the private sector, including GPF Chairman, Amir Dossal. The purpose of this forum was to highlight the importance of, “engaging public authorities, the private sector, social enterprises and cooperatives in managing sustainable food supply chains, promoting sustainable agriculture and generating responsible value chains.”
In her remarks, Ms. Karin Manente, Sr. External Partnerships Officer at the World Food Programme emphasized the importance of integrating farmers and markets to the eradication of hunger.
H.E. Kaha Umnadze, Permanent Representative of Georgia to the United Nations, later noted that although there are certain steps governments can take to ensure food security, the rest is left to the private sector to guarantee sustainable food value.
H.E. Mr. Jeremiah Nyamane Kingsley Mamabolo, Permanent Representative of South Africa to the United Nations, addressed the centrality of food security to eradicating hunger, the significance of a Sustainable Development Goal on food security, and the importance of a sustainable environment to the advancements of these goals.
In his concluding remarks, H.E. Francesco Paolo Fulci, President of Ferrero S.p.A, stressed the significance of multi-stakeholder commitment by stating that governments, international organizations, civil society, academia and the private sector are all crucial actors to ensure food security and future food supply.
