Pearl Initiative Announces Strategic Partnership with the UN Global Compact

On Thursday, September 19, 2013 Badr Jafar (co-founder, Pearl Initiative and CEO, Crescent Enterprises) and Georg Kell (Executive Director, United Nations Global Compact) will announce a Strategic Partnership between the Pearl Initiative and the United Nations Global Compact.

Badr Jafar is a key Strategic Adviser of the Global Partnerships Forum. A recipient of the Young CEO award in 2009 and the Middle East's Energy CEO of the year award in 2010, he is a globally recognized social entrepreneur. In 2011 the World Economic Forum named him a Young Global Leader.

In September 2010, Badr Jafar and Amir Dossal, Chairman of the Global Partnerships Forum, launched the Pearl Initiative at the United Nations headquarters in New York in cooperation with the UN Office for Partnerships. The Pearl Initiative is an independent, not-for-profit, private-sector-led organization working to improve corporate accountability and transparency in the Arab World. The partnership with UN Global Compact will promote the UN Global Compact 10 principles in the Gulf Region and drive joint private sector-led programmes in corporate responsibility, accountability and transparency. It aims to embed corporate sustainability in the GCC and MENA region and mobilize business action and collaboration in support of regional and global priorities.

The event on September 19th will feature a Signing of the Memorandum of Understanding between the UN Global Compact and the Pearl Initiative, which will be followed by business leaders, government officials, and other leading thinkers engaging in an interactive discussion on the role of local/regional sustainability movements in addressing the priorities of the GCC and MENA region.
