INTRODUCTION

The Global Partnerships Institute, in collaboration with the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs, the Department of Public Information and the International Telecommunication Union has created a unique program for students and young leaders interested in deepening their understanding of international affairs and the practical facilitation of intergovernmental cooperation.

Course Overview

The GPI United Nations Careers Clinic is a 5-day intensive course designed to help students gain knowledge about the inner workings of the United Nations, acquire deeper insight into the process behind creating cross-sector policy, broaden awareness of ongoing United Nations projects, and share perspectives on current political events.

By becoming familiar with the ways in which the United Nations promotes international relations, assists in the creation of cross-sector policy, and maintains open diplomatic channels worldwide, participants will gain a valuable introductionto the practical application of political science.

The GPI United Nations Clinic covers diverse areas of global interest, such as the perpetuation of international peace and security, the amelioration of living standards and human rights, conflict prevention, more widespread access to better health and education, and the reduction of violence against women. The Clinic will provide students with concrete direction forbecoming involved with efforts that promote and maintain a safer world for current and future generations.

In addition to guest presentations by senior officials of the United Nations, the course will also include a VIP tour of the United Nations headquarters, possible visit to the New York Stock Exchange, Microsoft’s Youth Spark initiative, and potentially the Columbia University Business School.

Course Objectives

This course aims to inspire future diplomats, policymakers, international development experts, and prospective peacekeepers by offering students a comprehensive overview of work efforts currently undertaken by the United Nations.

Who should attend?

This course is intended for students and young adults aged 18-25 interested in global policy issues and eager for an opportunity to learn how international diplomacyis conducted at the professional level. Participants may be students enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate program, though this is not mandatory.

Meeting Times

Students will attend Monday-Friday from 9:30-5:00pm.

Enrollment

Enrollment is limited to 20-25students, to enable close interaction with course leaders and fellow participants.

Class Expectations

In addition to the essential pre-reading (which will be provided to all enrolled students in advance of the lectures), the coursework involves active class participation; adequate preparation is expected and any student who feels unprepared should work with the instructor to better understand the concepts. Cell phone use will not be permitted during class.

Fees and Application

The cost of a one-week United Nations Clinic course ranges from $4,500-$5,000. To participate, please complete the form below and submit it to the Course Director.
